SPF (Sun Protection Factor) at a glance
There's just one week left until summer, so the topic of SPF will be heard more and more often ☀️
Sunlight is essential for us; it's important for vitamin D synthesis, circadian rhythms, mood, and overall well-being. However, the problem isn't the sun itself. The problem is excessive UV radiation exposure to the skin.
UV radiation is one of the main external factors responsible for what is called photo-aging. It promotes:
• collagen and elastin degradation
• oxidative stress in cells
• pigmentation disorders
• chronic inflammation in the skin
• capillary damage and sensitivity
• and DNA damage, which accumulates over time
In scientific literature, the use of SPF is considered one of the most effective preventive measures against premature skin aging.
If you had to choose just one product for skin aging prevention—it would very likely be SPF.
Daily UV protection is especially important for people with:
• rosacea
• melasma or a tendency towards pigmentation
• sensitive skin
• skin barrier damage
• or after aesthetic procedures
SPF products are usually divided into
▫️ Mineral SPFs
They usually contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. They work by reflecting and scattering UV rays.
They are often considered safer for sensitive skin, less irritating to the eyes, more suitable after procedures or when there is active skin inflammation. They are also more photostable and less likely to cause reactions.
Disadvantages — heavier texture, whiter tint, a feel on the skin that not everyone finds pleasant.
▫️ Chemical SPFs
They work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat.
Their textures are usually lighter, more cosmetically elegant, so many people are more willing to use them daily.
However, some chemical filters can irritate sensitive skin or eyes, and for some UV filters, there are still discussions about their potential impact on the hormonal system and overall body health.
Therefore, when choosing an SPF, the most important thing is not the "trendiest" product, but whether:
✔️ it suits your skin type
✔️ it doesn't irritate
✔️ you will use it in sufficient quantity and regularly (very important!)
I understand that today the choice of SPF can seem very wide and sometimes even confusing — especially when the skin is sensitive, reactive, or has specific problems.
Therefore, I always invite you to consult — together we will assess your skin condition, needs, and choose an SPF that you will not only "have to" but also want to use every day.
Because the best SPF is not the most expensive or the most popular. The best SPF is the one your skin tolerates and that you use daily 🤍
